i got good mail about eticquet with making dua'a,i like to share here too.
The Relationship Between Supplication and Ramadaan
Making dua is a part of the month of Ramadan. The connection between the noble practice of supplicating to Allah and the honored month of Ramadan is shown in the following ways. The ayah of supplication is preceded and followed by ayaat of fasting (2:183-187).
183. O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that ye may (learn) self-restraint, -
184. (Fasting) for a fixed number of days; but if any of you is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed number (Should be made up) from days later. For those who can do it (With hardship), is a ransom, the feeding of one that is indigent. But he that will give more, of his own free will,- it is better for him. And it is better for you that ye fast, if ye only knew.
185. Ramadan is the (month) in which was sent down the Qur'an, as a guide to mankind, also clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment (Between right and wrong). So every one of you who is present (at his home) during that month should spend it in fasting, but if any one is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed period (Should be made up) by days later. Allah intends every facility for you; He does not want to put to difficulties. (He wants you) to complete the prescribed period, and to glorify Him in that He has guided you; and perchance ye shall be grateful.
186. When My servants ask thee concerning Me, I am indeed close (to them): I listen to the prayer of every suppliant when he calleth on Me: Let them also, with a will, Listen to My call, and believe in Me: That they may walk in the right way.
Etiquette of making du’aa’ (supplication)
"Allah is the One who brings every soul to account what it has earned, yet they ascribe to God associates, how indeed! Say: "Name them! Or do you mean to inform Him of what He knows is not in the earth? Or do you utter empty words?" but alluring to the unbelievers are theire forgeries; they have been hindered from the Way and whoever Allah leaves astray,he shall have no guide." Ar Ra'ad 33
187. Permitted to you, on the night of the fasts, is the approach to your wives. They are your garments and ye are their garments. Allah knoweth what ye used to do secretly among yourselves; but He turned to you and forgave you; so now associate with them, and seek what Allah Hath ordained for you, and eat and drink, until the white thread of dawn appear to you distinct from its black thread; then complete your fast Till the night appears; but do not associate with your wives while ye are in retreat in the mosques. Those are Limits (set by) Allah. Approach not nigh thereto. Thus doth Allah make clear His Signs to men: that they may learn self-restraint. The Prophet (s.A.a.w.s.) said that the du’a of the fasting one is accepted.
“Indeed for the fasting person, when he brakes his fast, is a supplication that will never be rejected.”
“Three people’s supplication will not be rejected: a just ruler, a fasting person until he brakes his fast, and an oppressed person.” It is encouraged to make du’a in laylat’ul-qadr.
Aisha asked the Prophet (s.A.a.w.s.) “What should I say on Laylat’il-qadr?” And he replied, “O Allah, indeed you are a Pardoner, and you love pardon; so pardon me.” The Prophet (s.A.w.s.) supplicated all night before the battle of badr, which occurred during Ramadan.
Etiquette of making du’aa’ (supplication)
by Shaykh Muhammad Sâlih al-Munajjid
Firstly:
Allaah loves to be asked, and He encourages that in all things. He is angry with the one who does not ask of Him and He encourages His slaves to ask of Him. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“And your Lord said: “Invoke Me [i.e. believe in My Oneness (Islamic Monotheism) and ask Me for anything] I will respond to your (invocation)” [Ghaafir 40:60]
Du’aa’ is very important in Islam, so much so that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Du’aa’ is worship.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 3372; Abu Dawood, 1479; Ibn Maajah, 3828; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi, 2590.
Secondly:
The etiquette of du’aa’:
1 – The one who is making du’aa’ should believe in Tawheed with regard to the divinity, Lordship, names and attributes of Allaah. His heart should be filled with Tawheed. In order for Allaah to respond to the du’aa’, it is essential that the person should be responding to his Lord by obeying Him and not disobeying Him. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“And when My slaves ask you (O Muhammad) concerning Me, then (answer them), I am indeed near (to them by My Knowledge). I respond to the invocations of the supplicant when he calls on Me (without any mediator or intercessor) . So let them obey Me and believe in Me, so that they may be led aright” [al-Baqarah 2:186]
2– Sincerity towards Allaah alone in making du’aa’. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“And they were commanded not, but that they should worship Allaah, and worship none but Him Alone (abstaining from ascribing partners to Him)” [al-Bayyinah 98:5]
Du’aa’ is worship, as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, so sincerity (ikhlaas) is a condition of its being accepted.
3– We should ask of Allaah by His most beautiful names. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“And (all) the Most Beautiful Names belong to Allaah, so call on Him by them, and leave the company of those who belie or deny (or utter impious speech against) His Names” [al-A’raaf 7:180]
4– We should praise Allaah as He deserves before we call upon Him. Al-Tirmidhi (3476) narrated that Fadaalah ibn ‘Ubayd (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: Whilst the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was sitting, a man came in and prayed and said, “ O Allaah, forgive me and have mercy on me.”The Messenger of Allaah (S) said,
“You have been too hasty, O worshipper. When you have prayed and are sitting, praise Allaah as He deserves to be praised, and send blessings upon me, then call upon Him.”
According to another version (3477):
“When one of you prays, let him start with praise of Allaah, then let him send blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), then let him ask whatever he likes after that.”
Then another man prayed after that, and he praised Allaah and sent blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “O worshipper, ask and you will be answered.”Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi, 2765, 2767.
5– Sending blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
“Every du’aa’ is kept back until you send blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).” Narrated by al-Tabaraani in al-Awsat, 1/220; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 4399.
6– Facing towards the qiblah. Muslim (1763) narrated that ‘Umar ibn al-Khattaab (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: On the day of Badr, the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) looked at the mushrikeen, who were one thousand strong, and his companions numbered three hundred and nineteen. Then the Prophet of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) turned to face the qiblah, then he stretched forth his hands and started to cry out to his Lord:
“O Allaah, grant me what You have promised me, O Allaah, give me what You have promised me. O Allaah, if this small band of Muslims perishes, You will not be worshipped on earth.”
He kept on crying out to his Lord, stretching forth his hands, facing towards the qiblah, until his cloak fell from his shoulders…
al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in Sharh Muslim: This shows that it is mustahabb to face towards the qiblah when making du’aa’, and to raise the hands.
7– Raising the hands. Abu Dawood (1488) narrated that Salmaan (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
“Your Lord, may He be blessed and exalted, is Kind and Most Generous, and He is too kind to let His slave, if he raises his hands to Him, bring them back empty.” Classed as saheeh by Shaykh al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood, 1320.
The palm of the hand should be raised heavenwards, in the manner of a humble beggar who hopes to be given something. Abu Dawood (1486) narrated from Maalik ibn Yasaar (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
“When you ask of Allaah, ask of Him with the palms of your hands, not with the backs of them.” Classed as saheeh by Shaykh al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood, 1318.
Should the hands be held together when raising them or should there be a gap between them?
Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) stated in al-Sharh al-Mumti’ (4/25) that they should be held together. What he said is: “As for separating them and holding them far apart from one another, there is no basis for that in the Sunnah or in the words of the scholars.” End quote.
8– Having certain faith that Allaah will respond, and focusing with proper presence of mind, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
“Call upon Allaah when you are certain of a response, and remember that Allaah will not answer a du’aa’ that comes from a negligent and heedless heart.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 3479; classed as hasan by Shaykh al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi, 2766.
9– Asking frequently. A person should ask his Lord for whatever he wants of the good things in this world and the Hereafter, and he should beseech Allaah in du’aa’, and not seek a hasty response, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The slave will receive a response so long as his du’aa’ does not involve sin or severing of family ties, and so long as he is not hasty.” It was said, “What does being hasty mean?” He said: “When he says, ‘I made du’aa’ and I made du’aa’, and I have not seen any response,’ and he gets frustrated and stops making du’aa’.” Narrated by al-Bukahari, 6340; Muslim, 2735.
10 - He should be firm in his du’aa’, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “No one of you should say, ‘O Allaah, forgive me if You wish, O Allaah, have mercy on me if You wish’; he should be firm in his asking, for Allaah cannot be compelled.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 6339; Muslim, 2679.
11– Beseeching, humility, hope and fear. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Invoke your Lord with humility and in secret” [al-A’raaf 7:55]
“Verily, they used to hasten on to do good deeds, and they used to call on Us with hope and fear, and used to humble themselves before Us” [al-Anbiya’ 21:60]
“And remember your Lord within yourself, humbly and with fear and without loudness in words in the mornings and in the afternoons” [al-A’raaf 7:20]
12 – Saying du’aa’s three times. Al-Bukhaari (240) and Muslim (1794) narrated that ‘Abd-Allaah ibn Mas’ood (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: “Whilst the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was praying at the Ka’bah, Abu Jahl and his companions were sitting nearby. They had slaughtered a camel the previous day, and Abu Jahl said: “Which of you will go and get the abdominal contents of the camel of Banu So and so and put it on the back of Muhammad when he prostrates?” The worst of the people went and got it, and when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) prostrated, he placed it between his shoulders. They started laughing, leaning against one another. I was standing there watching, and if I had had any power, I would have lifted it from the back of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) remained in prostration, not lifting his head, until someone went and told Faatimah. She came with Juwayriyah, and lifted it from him, then she turned to them and rebuked them. When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) had finished his prayer, he raised his voice and prayed against them – and when he made du’aa’ or asked of Allaah he would repeat it three times – and he said: “O Allaah, punish Quraysh” three times. When they heard his voice, they stopped laughing and were afraid because of his du’aa’. Then he said, “O Allaah, punish Abu Jahl ibn Hishaam, ‘Utbah ibn Rabee’ah, Shaybah ibn Rabee’ah, al-Waleed ibn ‘Uqbah, Umayyah ibn Khalaf and ‘Uqbah ibn Abu Mu’ayt,” and he mentioned the seventh but I cannot remember who it was. By the One Who sent Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) with the truth, I saw those whom he had named slain on the day of Badr, then they were dragged and thrown into the well, the well of Badr.
13 – Ensuring that one’s food and clothing are good (i.e., halaal). Muslim (1015) narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “O people, Allaah is Good and does not accept anything but that which is good. Allaah enjoins upon the believers the same as He enjoined upon the Messengers. He says (interpretation of the meaning):
‘O (you) Messengers! Eat of the Tayyibaat [all kinds of Halaal (lawful) foods which Allaah has made lawful (meat of slaughtered eatable animals, milk products, fats, vegetables, fruits)] and do righteous deeds. Verily, I am Well Acquainted with what you do’ [al-Mu’minoon 23:51]
‘O you who believe (in the Oneness of Allaah — Islamic Monotheism)! Eat of the lawful things that We have provided you with’ [al-Baqarah 2:172]
Then he mentioned a man who travels for a long distance and is disheveled and dusty, and he stretches forth his hands towards heaven saying, ‘O Lord, O Lord,’ but his food is haraam, his drink is haraam, his clothing is haraam, he has been nourished with haraam, so how can he be responded to?
Ibn Rajab (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: Ensuring that one’s food, drink and clothing are halaal, and that one is nourished with halaal, is a means of having one’s du’aa’ answered. End quote.
14 – Saying du’aa’ silently and not out loud. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Invoke your Lord with humility and in secret” [al-A’raaf 7:55]
And Allaah praised His slave Zakariyyah (peace be upon him) by saying (interpretation of the meaning):
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
“When he called to his Lord (Allaah) a call in secret” [Maryam 19:3]

Repentance
(d. 1421 AH / n/a CE)
Repentance: means turning back from disobeying Allaah to obeying Him.
Repentance: is beloved to Allaah, as He says:-
“Verily, Allaah loves those who repent and those who purify themselves.” [1]
Repentance: is an obligation on every believer. Allaah says:-
“O you who believe! Turn to Allaah in sincere repentance!” [2]
Repentance: is from the means of attaining success. Allaah says:-
“And O believers, all of you, repent to Allaah in order that you may be successful.” [3]
Success is when someone gets what he is looking for and is saved from what he is running from.
Through Sincere Repentance: Allaah forgives sins no matter how big they are and no matter how many they are. Allaah says:-
Through Sincere Repentance: Allaah forgives sins no matter how big they are and no matter how many they are. Allaah says:-
“Say: O My slaves who have transgressed against themselves (because of sins), do not despair from the mercy of Allaah. Verily, Allaah forgives all sins. Verily, He is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” [4]
O my brother who has fallen into sins, do not despair from the mercy of your Lord, for indeed the door to repentance is open until the sun rises from the west. The Prophet (saw) said:-
“Verily, Allaah extends His hand out at night in order to accept the repentance of the sinner by day. And He extends His hand during the day in order to accept the repentance of the sinner by night, until (the day) when the sun will rise from its west.” [5]
And how many people have repented to Allaah from numerous and enormous sins and Allaah has accepted their repentance? Allaah says:-
“And those who do not supplicate to another god with Allaah, nor do they kill a person that Allaah has made forbidden (to kill) except with just cause, nor do they commit fornication. And whoever does this shall receive the punishment. The torment will be doubled for him on the Day of Resurrection and he will abide therein in disgrace. Except those who repent and believe and do righteous deeds, for those, Allaah will change their sins into good deeds. And Allaah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.” [6]
Sincere Repentance: must meet five conditions (in order to be accepted), which are:-
1. Remorse: for the sin that was committed, such that he is sad he did it and wishes he had never done it.
2. Ceasing: to commit the sin immediately. If the sin was against Allaah, then he should (1) stop doing it if it was an unlawful act, or (2) hasten to do it if it was an obligation that he abandoned doing. And if the sin was against a created being (such as humans), then he should hasten to free himself from it, whether by returning it back to him or seeking his forgiveness and pardon.
3. Determination: to not go back to doing that sin again in the future.
4. The repentance should not occur before the time when its acceptance is terminated, either by death or by the sun rising from the west. Allaah says:-
Allaah says:-
“Repentance is of no effect for those who commit sins constantly until when death faces one of them, he says: ‘Verily I repent now.’”
The Prophet (saw) said:-
“Whoever repents before the sun rises from its west, Allaah will accept his repentance.” [7]
O Allaah, grant us the sincere repentance and accept it from us, verily You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

The Quest For Allah's Mercy
It was narrated that in the days that Musa - alayhis salam - wandered with Bani Israaeel in the desert a grizzly drought befell them. Together, they all raised their hands towards the heavens praying for the blessed rain. Then, to the astonishment of Musa - alayhis salam - and all those watching, the few clouds that scattered the sky vanished, the heat scorched down, and the drought intensified.
It was revealed to Musa that there was a sinner amongst Bani Israaeel that had disobeyed Allah for more than 40 years of his life. “Let him separate himself from the congregation,” Allah told Musa. “Only then shall I shower you all with rain.”
Musa - alayhis salam - called out to the throngs of humanity, “There is a person amongst us who has disobeyed Allah for 40 years. Let him separate himself from the congregation and only then shall we be rescued from the drought.” That man, waited, looking left and right, hoping that someone else would step forward…but no one did. Sweat poured from his brow and he knew he was the one.
If he stayed amongst the congregation all would die of thirst; yet, if he stepped forward he would be humiliated for all eternity.
He raised his hands with sincerity he had never known before, with humility he had never tasted, tears poured on both cheeks, “O Allah, have mercy on me! O Allah, hide my sins! O Allah, forgive me!”
As Musa - alayhis salam - and Bani Israaeel awaited for the sinner to step forward, the clouds hugged the sky and the rain poured. Musa - alayhis salam - asked Allah ta'aala, “O Allah, you blessed us with rain even though that sinner did not come forward.”And Allah ta'aala replied, “O Musa, it is for the repentance of that very person that I blessed all of Bani Israaeel with water.” Musa, wanting to know who was this blessed man, asked, “Show him to me O Allah!” Allah ta'aala replied, “O Musa, I hid his sins for 40 years. Do you think that after his repentance I shall expose him?”
The Most Merciful shows Mercy to those who have Mercy on Others
Translated by Isma'îl alarcon
The Prophet (sala Allahu `alihi was-Salaam) once kissed Al-Hasan Ibn `Alee (i.e. his grandson) while Al-Aqra' Ibn Haabis was in his presence. So Al-Aqra' said to him: " You kiss your children. I swear by Allaah, I have ten children and I never kissed any one of them!" So the Prophet (sala Allahu `alihi was-Salaam) said: "He who doesn't show mercy (to others) will not be shown mercy (by Allaah)." Verily, mercy - in our religion - encompasses this world and the hereafter, as well as mankind, animals, birds, and the surrounding habitats.
Allaah says:
"And My mercy encompasses every thing."
Allaah has described Himself with mercy and He has also described His prophets and righteous servants with it. Allaah says:
"Muhammad is the Messenger of Allaah (sala Allahu `alihi was-Salaam) and those who are with him are severe against the disbelievers and merciful to one another."
Allaah has made his sending forth of the Prophet (sala Allahu `alihi was-Salaam) as a mercy to all of creation, as He says:
"And We have not sent you (O Muhammad) except as a mercy to the worlds."
The word "worlds" (`aalameen) is general and thus includes the world of the humans, the world of the jinn, the world of the animals and the world of the birds, as well as the nations found on land and the nations found on sea.
And indeed Allaah has commanded that mercy be applied to every thing and in every action. So even when you slaughter you sacrificial animal, you show mercy to it by saying Bismillaah and by sharpening your sword (so that it will be a quick and painless death). The Prophet (sala Allahu `alihi was-Salaam) said:
"Verily Allaah has prescribed Ihsaan (goodness) for everything. So when you slaughter, then slaughter in a good manner, and when you kill (in war), then kill in a good manner. And let each of you sharpen his blade and let him spare the animal he slaughters from suffering."
And Allaah indeed forgave one prostitute from the Jews who showed mercy to a dog that was dying from thirst. She filled her shoe with water and then taking hold of the dog's mouth, she gave it the water to drink. So Allaah was thankful to her for what she did and forgave her sins.
And once our Prophet (sala Allahu `alihi was-Salaam) saw one of his Companions grab the baby of a lark, and it began screeching over the heads of the Companions. So he (sala Allahu `alihi was-Salaam) said: "Who bereaved this (lark) of her child? Return her children back to her!"
The more weak and poor a human being is, the more required we are of showing mercy to him. And being gentle with him is what is most incumbent. This is why our Lord has forbidden us from oppressing the orphan. Allaah says: "Therefore, treat not the orphan with oppression. And do not repel the beggar."
The Prophet (sala Allahu `alihi was-Salaam) said:
"The person that looks after and supports the widow and the needy one is like the mujaahid (one who makes Jihaad) in the Cause of Allaah."
And he (sala Allahu `alihi was-Salaam) would rub the head of the orphan and say:
"I and the guardian of an orphan will be like this in Paradise - and he SAWS gestured with his index and middle finger."
Indeed he (sala Allahu `alihi was-Salaam) commanded us to take care of the children and the women and the elders. Thus, in his last words to his Companions and his nation, he said:
"The prayer and what your right hands possess." "Take good care of the women (i.e. wives)."
And he (sala Allahu `alihi was-Salaam) said:
"The best of you is the best to his wives. And I am the best amongst you with my wives."
Mercy is something innate, which Allaah has placed into the hearts of (all) His creatures, even the lions - the most dangerous of them - for they are merciful to their children. Yet Allaah is more merciful to His creation than a mother is to her child. That is why on the day that He created mercy, He created one hundred parts to it. And He left ninety-nine parts with Him, by which He will show mercy to His servants on the Day of Judgement, and sent down one single part of mercy to earth, which humans and animals share amongst themselves.
The Messenger of Allaah (sala Allahu `alihi was-Salaam) has condemned the person that is void of any mercy and who doesn't attain a large amount of it. This is why he (sala Allahu `alihi was-Salaam) condemned the one who breaks family ties. He (sala Allahu `alihi was- Salaam) said:
"Kinship is connected to the Throne (`Arsh). It says: `Whoever severs me, then break (away from) him. And whoever maintains me, then keep connected to him."
And in one narration:
"Verily, the kinship will be connected to the Throne of the Most Merciful on the Day of Judgement. It will say: `This is the place for the one who sought refuge in You from the severing (of family ties).' So Allaah will say to it: `Will it please you that I connect those who maintained you and that I cut off those who severed you?' And it will say: `I will be pleased (with that), my Lord.'"
And he (sala Allahu `alihi was-Salaam) condemned the oppressive leaders who do not show mercy to their people, by saying:
"The worst leaders are the cruel oppressive ones (al-hutamah) ."
And Allaah has named Himself Ar-Rahmaan and Ar-Raheem, so he is the Most Merciful of this world and the Hereafter (i.e. Ar-Rahmaan) and the bestower and giver of mercy (i.e. Raheem). This is why He has commanded it in every place and in every situation. The Muslim begins his action by saying Bismillaahir- Rahmaanir- Raheem so that Allaah can bless him in his action. So every action that is void of mercy, then there is no blessing in it, nor any good. And the servants of Allaah showing mercy towards one another is a cause for Allaah sending His mercy down on them.
The Prophet (sala Allahu `alihi was-Salaam) said:
"The Most Merciful shows mercy to those who have mercy on others. Show mercy to those on earth, and the One above the heaven will show mercy to you."
O Allaah, have mercy on us above the earth and below the earth and on the Day when our deeds will be presented to us. And cause us to be merciful to one another just as the Companions of Your Prophet (sala Allahu `alihi was-Salaam) were. And have mercy on our dead ones and put those who have mercy from amongst Your servants in charge over us O Rahmaan O Raheem!

On the authority of Anas (radiAllaahu anhu) who said : I heard the Messenger of Allaah (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) say :
Allaah the Almighty has said : O Son of Aadam, as long as you invoke Me and ask of Me, I shall forgive you for what you have done, and I shall not mind. O Son of Aadam, were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky and you then asked forgiveness from Me, I would forgive you. O Son of Aadam, were you to come to Me with sins nearly as great as the Earth, and were you then to face Me, ascribing no partner to Me, I would bring you forgiveness nearly as great as it [too].
It was related by at-Tirmidhee, who said that it was a Hasan hadeeth.
Explanation of Hadeeth Number 42
In this hadeeth are immense good tidings, clemency and great generosity, and what cannot be enumerated of the types of Grace and Beneficence, Compassion and Mercy and what demands Gratitude. And similar to it is his (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) statement: "Allaah is more Joyous by the repentance of His slave, than the joy of one of you when he finds his lost camel [in the desert]". From Abu Ayyoob (radiAllaahu anhu), when he was on his death-bed, that he said:
"Until now I have hidden from you something that I heard from the Messenger of Allaah (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam). I heard him say: 'If you did not commit sins then Allaah would create a new Creation who would then commit sins [and repent], so He would forgive them'".
And there are many other narrations which are in agreement with the meaning of this hadeeth. As for His, 'azza wa jall, statement: "O Son of Aadam, as long as you invoke Me and ask of Me" then this is in agreement with His statement: "I [treat My Slave] in accordance to what he supposes of Me, so let him deem of Me whatever he wishes". And it has been narrated that when a Slave commits a sin and then feels remorse, and says "O My Lord! I have committed a sin, so forgive me, for surely none can forgive sins except you!"; so Allaah ta'aalaa says "My slave knows that he has a Lord, Who forgives sins and [also] punishes for them. So I testify to you that I have forgiven him". Then [the slave] does the same a second time, and a third, and so Allaah 'azza wa jall replies the same way each time. Then after that He says: "Do as you please, for I have forgiven you!", meaning when he commits a sin and then repents for it. Know, that for the acceptance of Repentance there are three conditions:
- cessation from the sin,
- remorse for what has preceeded,
- and firm resolve not to return to performing the sin.
And if the sin involved taking the right of another person, then he must hasten to return his right and absolve himself from this transgression. And if the sin was between him and Allaah ta'aalaa, and a kaffaarah (expiation) is required for this sin, then it is also necessary that he fulfills this kaffaarah, and thus this becomes the fourth condition [for the acceptance of repentance]. And so, even if a person were to commit a sin many times in a single day, and then repent each time with its conditions, Allaah ta'aalaa would still forgive him.
And His, subhaanahu, statement: "for what you have done" implies that Allaah will forgive despite the repetition of the sin.
And His, subhaanahu, statement: "O Son of Aadam, were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky and you then asked forgiveness from Me, I would forgive you" means that if these sins had a physical form then they would fill the space between the sky and the earth - and this is the limit of multitude. However, even then His Generosity, Clemency, and Forgiveness are still more and greater than that, and there can not even be the thought of comparison between them. So the sins of the creation are wiped away by His Clemency and Forgiveness.
And His, subhaanahu, statement: "and were you then to face Me" means that if the slave were to die upon Eemaan, without associating any partners with Allaah. And there can be no solace or contentment for the Believer until he has faced His Lord. And Allaah ta'aalaa has said:
"Verily Allaah does not forgive that partners be asscociated with Him [in Worship], but He forgives [all sins] other than that for whomsoever He pleases" [Soorah an-Nisaa', 48].
And Abu Hurayrah (radiAllaahu anhu) said that the Messenger of Allaah (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
"Having good supposition of Allaah is from the best Worship of Allaah".
And Allaah knows best.
Summary :
- That the door of repentance is ever open to a person
- That Allaah forgives no matter how much we sin, as long as we truly repent
- That asscociating partners with Allaah (shirk) is a sin which He does not forgive
- That if we seek to live a life upholding Tawheed, then we have great hope that He will turn to us in Mercy

Translated by Isma'îl alarcon

Explanation of Hadeeth Number 42
- cessation from the sin,
- remorse for what has preceeded,
- and firm resolve not to return to performing the sin.
And if the sin involved taking the right of another person, then he must hasten to return his right and absolve himself from this transgression. Mercy
The Muslim is merciful, for mercy is one of the traits of a Muslim, since it is the source of a pure soul and spirit. By being kind, doing righteous deeds, staying away from evil, and shunning corruption, the Muslim's soul abides in purity and his spirit remains in goodness. Since this is the case, then mercy would never separate from his heart at all. It is for this reason that the Muslim loves mercy, he spreads and encourages it and calls others to it, believing in Allah's saying:
“Then he became one of those who believed and recommended one another to perseverance and patience, and (also) recommended one another to pity and compassion. They are those on the Right Hand (i.e. the dwellers of Paradise).” (90:17-18 )
And acting according to His Messenger's saying:
"Allah is only merciful with those who show mercy to others." (Al-Bukhari)
And:
"Be merciful to those in the earth, so the One above the heavens will be merciful to you." (At-Tabarani and Al-Hakim with a Sahih chain)
And being guided by his saying:
"He who does not show mercy to others, will not be shown mercy." (Al-Bukhari)
And:
"Mercy is only removed from the miserable." (Abu Dawud and At-Tirmithi)
The Muslim actualizes the saying of the Prophet (SAW).
"The believers in their mutual love, mercy and sympathy are just like one body. When one of the limbs suffers, the whole body responds to it with sleeplessness and fevers." (Muslim)
Since the reality of mercy is a kindness of the heart and a compassion of the soul that leads to being forgiving and beneficent, it does not merely exist as internal kindness without external results. Rather the heart's mercy is the essence of external results whose physical reality is visible. Among the external effects of mercy are: pardoning those who slip, forgiving those who are mistaken, helping those in trouble, assisting the weak, feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, tending to the sick, and consoling the grieved. All of these, as well as many other things are among the effects of mercy. The following are some real cases of examples of mercy:
1. Al-Bukhari recorded that Anas bin Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "We went with Allah's Messenger (SAW) to the blacksmith Abu Saif, and he was the husband of the wet nurse of Ibrahim (the son of the Prophet (SAW). Allah's Messenger (SAW) took Ibrahim and kissed him and smelled him. Later we went to Abu Saifs house and at that time Ibrahim was in his last breaths, and the eyes of Allah's Messenger (SAW), started shedding tears. 'Abdur-Rahman bin 'Awf said, 'O Allah's Messenger even you are weeping!' He said:
"O ibn 'Awf, this is mercy," Then he wept more and said:
"The eyes are shedding tears and the heart is grieved, and we will not say except what pleases our Lord, O Ibrahim! Indeed we are grieved by your separation."
Allah's Messenger (SAW) visited his younger child at the house of his wet nurse. He kissed him and smelled him. Then he returned to visit him out of compassion and kindness while he was sick and in his last breath. Then he wept, his eyes shedding tears of sorrow and grief. This behavior is an example of the manifestation of the mercy in one's heart.
Al-Bukhari reported that Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, said: Allah's Messenger (SAW) said:
"A person was walking on his way when he became extremely thirsty. He (suddenly) found a well, he got down into it to drink from it. Upon leaving it, he saw a panting dog eating dirt for its moisture. The man thought to himself: 'This dog is extremely thirsty as I was,' So he descended into the well, filled up his leather sock with water, and holding it in his mouth, climbed up and quenched the thirst of the dog. Allah held his action in high esteem and forgave him"
The Companions asked: "Shall we be rewarded for showing kindness to the animals too?" He (SAW) said:
"A reward is given in connection for every moist liver (living creature)."
This man descended into the well, filled his leather sock with water and holding it in his teeth, climbed up, and quenched the thirst of the dog. This was done out of his affection, kindness and compassion, otherwise, he would have not undertaken such an act.
To the contrary of the above, there is a Hadith recorded by Al-Bukhari that Abu Hurairah narrated from the Prophet (SAW) who said:
"A woman was punished in Hell because of a cat, which she imprisoned until it died. It was said to her, "You did not give it to eat or to drink when it was imprisoned, nor did you release it so that it might eat the vermin of the earth.")
The behavior of this woman was a manifestation of a heart enveloped by evil, devoid of mercy, and mercy is not removed but from the miserable.
Al-Bukhari recorded that Abu Qatadah said that Allah's Messenger (SAW); said:
"When I enter the prayer I intend to prolong it. Then I hear the crying of a child, so I shorten it knowing the difficulty his mother will have with him crying."
The Prophet (SAW) considered the mother whose infant was crying along with the long recitation he had intended on reciting. This is another manifestation of the heart's mercy that Allah has ordered upon His servants.
2. It is reported that while Zayn Al-'Abidin 'Ali bin Al-Husayn was going to the Masjid, someone verbally abused him. His servants followed the man to beat him and punish him. However, he prevented them out of mercy for the man. He said, "O so-and-so! I am more than what you have said.
What you do not know about me is more than what you do know. If you want to know more, I will tell you." Upon hearing this, the man felt ashamed and shy. Then, Zayn Al-'Abidin took off his own cloak and gave it to him in addition to granting him a thousand dirhams.
This is an example of pardoning, and such benevolence would not occur except as a manifestation of the mercy in the heart of the grandson of Allah's Messenger (SAW).
"Allah is the One who brings every soul to account what it has earned, yet they ascribe to God associates, how indeed! Say: "Name them! Or do you mean to inform Him of what He knows is not in the earth? Or do you utter empty words?" but alluring to the unbelievers are theire forgeries; they have been hindered from the Way and whoever Allah leaves astray,he shall have no guide."
